Our current agricultural issues are vast. Yet many institutions, organizations, and individuals are working towards a better way to feed the people on our planet and diminish ecological impact. To this end, I am sharing four case studies that move toward progress from a different perspective. All of them employ emerging technologies and innovative approaches. MITCityFarm at MIT’s Media Lab prioritizes growing food for a growing population. They seek to optimize emerging technologies by combining engineering, data, and network connectivity.

 

 

Boswyck Farm (Astoria, NY)

Boswyck FarmsBoswyck Farms is working to eliminate food deserts. They actively recruit and empower a diverse group of urbanites to grow food in limited space using emerging technologies.

 

 

 

Stoney Meadows Farm (South Dartmouth, MA)

Jim Munger 01Stoney Meadows Farm bridges traditional rural agriculture and the urban agriculture of the future. They experiment with new technology to decrease resource consumption and promote community engagement through education and outreach.
